Among the flowering harakeke and dense coastal greens of Aotearoa, White-eye (Tauhou) captures the lively spirit of the silvereye—known in Te Reo Māori as tauhou, meaning “new arrival.”
First self-introduced to New Zealand in the 1800s, the tauhou has since become a familiar presence in native gardens and bush alike. Here, its soft exchanges are visualised as flowing loops of speech or song, weaving connection between birds and land. Originally published in the Illusive: Contemporary Illustration book series, this work balances modern graphic language with a deep respect for the stories carried by nature’s smallest messengers.
