After the massive success of the Nintendo Switch launch commercial I worked on directly with Nintendo Japan, we set a new creative standard for their advertising. This project marked a significant departure from what Nintendo had done before. Instead of relying on heightened 3D graphics, we showcased grounded, everyday people in real-life scenarios. The approach was deliberately authentic—a bold move that reflected the Nintendo Switch's unique place in gamers' everyday lives.
This concept—showing a lifestyle-focused, authentic use of the Switch—is still being used today in Nintendo’s campaigns. It redefined how the brand connects with its audience, moving towards an honest and relatable portrayal of gaming. While the initial project involved working directly with Nintendo, the Super Bowl ad represented a shift back to a traditional agency collaboration.
Key collaborators included Creative Director Dominick Maiolo, Producer Brian Behling, and Art Director Omari Miller, all of whom were an absolute blast to work with.
During the campaign, Nicolas Chavez and Stephanie Peters from Nintendo of America championed the idea of making this Nintendo’s first-ever Super Bowl spot, allocating an estimated $5 million to air the ad during the 4th quarter.
A memorable moment unfolded after the "Switch" commercial aired. That same night, the New England Patriots staged an unlikely comeback, breaking the hearts of Atlanta Falcons fans. Internet chatter suggested that the Nintendo Switch commercial may have somehow "changed the game." Who knows? But it’s a fun idea to entertain.
The commercial itself was a great success, garnering over 20 million views on YouTube and earning a spot as one of the Super Bowl’s standout surprises. It ranked third overall, which is cool considering it wasn’t a gag-filled or over-the-top spot. Instead, it remained grounded, focusing on real-life scenarios.
Notably, the ad featured a soundtrack by an then-unknown band, Imagine Dragons. This exposure catapulted their track and band into the spotlight.
I’m stoked to have been part of such a groundbreaking moment in Nintendo’s history, and it’s amazing to see how the authentic, lifestyle-driven approach continues to influence their advertising today.
